Good oral hygiene is important because of the dangers that can come from poor oral hygiene. These include cavities, gum disease, and the buildup of plaque and tartar. If you don’t maintain good oral hygiene, you risk becoming susceptible to other health problems as well.

How to practice good oral hygiene?

  • Get regular checkups

Regular dental checkups and cleanings are important for good oral hygiene. Most dentists recommend a checkup and cleaning every six months to ensure your teeth are healthy. Regular visits also allow the dentist to detect and treat problems early, which can save you a lot of time and money.

  • Brush your teeth

At least twice a day, you should brush your teeth for at least two minutes. It’s best to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste. Be sure to brush all surfaces of your teeth, including your back teeth. You should also brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth before you rinse your mouth.

  • Floss daily

We recommended flossing at least once a day. Flossing is recommended before bed to eliminate plaque and food debris that is stuck between teeth. 

  • Use mouthwash

Mouthwash is a great way to freshen up your breath. Even though mouthwash doesn’t replace good oral hygiene practices, it is an effective way to prevent cavities and gum disease. When you use mouthwash, you reduce plaque and bacteria in your mouth. This decreases your risk of cavities. 

  • Avoid sugary foods and drinks

Sugary foods and drinks are the enemies of good oral hygiene. All food has sugar in it, but sugary foods and drinks are especially bad for your teeth. The bacteria in the mouth love sugar as much as they love anything else. When you eat or drink something sugary, the bacteria feast on the sugar. This makes them release acids that damage the teeth and form cavities.

  • Quit smoking

Smoking decreases your body’s ability to heal itself. It can also increase your risk for gum disease and tooth loss. Tobacco use also leads to bad breath, discolored teeth, and an increased risk of mouth cancer. So, quitting smoking is very important for oral health.
