Teeth Whitening

Teeth Whitening

The staining of teeth is very common and many people are affected by it. Our everyday habits, such as eating a lot of junk and colored foods, frequent snacking, improper brushing, ill effects of certain medication, grinding of teeth, and natural wear of teeth as we age contribute to the discoloration of the teeth. No matter what the cause is, dull-looking teeth are, no doubt, a major letdown and could easily lead to a lot of embarrassment.

The appearance of one’s teeth is just as important as its functionality. It wouldn’t be convincing to have strong and healthy teeth if they look all dull and stained. Moreover, having a bright and beautiful smile is a sign of confidence and it would give you a better edge while conversing with people. This is why we, as dentists, pay equal attention to the aesthetics of the smile and the functionality of one’s mouth.

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening, as the name suggests, is a dental procedure that’s carried out to make the teeth look whiter. We use a teeth whitening gel, which is essentially a dental bleach, to remove the stains off of the tooth surface. This way, all the microscopic coloring particles, bacteria, plaque, and other debris that contribute to the staining of your teeth will be gotten rid of.

Conventional teeth whitening

Popularly known as the ‘old-school’ method, conventional/in-office teeth whitening is the simplest and most widely practiced type of whitening. The dentist would initially check for any cavities, gum diseases, restorations or underlying infections that could have an effect on the procedure. A rubber dam will be placed on the teeth to avoid the gel from coming in contact with the gums.

The whitening gel’s main component is carbamide peroxide, which upon activation releases hydrogen peroxide. This breaks the staining molecules in the teeth and helps to get rid of them, thereby restoring the teeth to their natural color. When the extent of staining is too severe, the procedure may be repeated more than once until the desired shade is obtained.

At-home teeth whitening

Patients who don’t prefer sitting in the dentist’s office and would like to comfortably whiten their teeth at home can choose ‘At-home’ teeth whitening solutions. We would provide patients with custom-manufactured plastic trays that they can wear along with a whitening gel. The tray would look just like a mouth guard, and when worn, it would prevent the interference of saliva with the gel. This increases the effectivity of the gel. You can rinse it away after the procedure is completed and feel you have achieved the shade of teeth you desired.

Laser teeth whitening

Laser teeth whitening is, by far, the most advanced method of removing teeth stains. The gel we use for this purpose is photosensitive, meaning, it can be activated using a laser of a specific wavelength. The gel will be applied to the teeth and activated using a laser. It then releases a foam and helps to lift stains from the teeth surface. The results produced are magical and you would be surprised to see the changes in your smile. The entire procedure is completed in a matter of minutes and is known to be the quickest whitening procedure.  Patients who run on especially tight schedules vastly benefit from it.

You can choose the perfect whitening method for yourself based on your requirements, lifestyle, and suggestions from our dentist.
